What We Believe

Our faith rooted in Scripture and Reformed tradition

Our Presbyterian Heritage

As Presbyterians, we are part of the Reformed tradition that emerged from the Protestant Reformation. Our name comes from the Greek word "presbyter," meaning elder, reflecting our form of church government by elected representatives.

We are proud members of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, maintaining the faith and traditions that our Scottish founders brought to Maple in 1829.

Our theological roots trace back to John Calvin and the Scottish Reformer John Knox, emphasizing God's sovereignty, the authority of Scripture, and salvation by grace through faith alone.

Core Beliefs

Scripture Alone

The Bible is our supreme standard of faith and life. We believe it is the inspired Word of God, revealing God's will for humanity and guiding us in all matters of belief and practice.

Grace Alone

We believe that God's grace is the foundation of our salvation. It is by God's unmerited favor, not our own works, that we are saved through faith in Jesus Christ.

Christ Alone

Jesus Christ is Lord of all life. We believe He is fully God and fully human, our Savior who died for our sins and rose again, offering eternal life to all who believe.

Faith Alone

We are justified by faith alone, not by our good works. This faith is itself a gift from God, enabling us to trust in Christ for our salvation.

The Trinity

We worship one God in three persons:

God the Father

Creator and sustainer of all things, who loves us with an everlasting love.

God the Son

Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who became human to redeem us from sin.

God the Holy Spirit

Our comforter and guide, who empowers us for Christian life and service.

Living Faith

Our denomination's statement of faith, "Living Faith," expresses what we believe in contemporary language. It affirms that:

  • God has created and sustains the universe in love
  • Though sin separates us from God, Christ reconciles us
  • The Holy Spirit empowers us for Christian life and service
  • The Church is called to worship God and witness to Christ
  • God will bring about the fullness of the Kingdom

Baptism

We practice baptism as a sign and seal of God's covenant promise. We baptize both infants and adults, recognizing God's grace that claims us before we can claim God.

Lord's Supper

In communion, we remember Christ's sacrifice and celebrate His presence among us. All who trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome at His table.

Living Out Our Faith

"To be followers of Jesus Christ who are committed to sharing the love of God within our Maple and global communities."

Worship

Gathering to praise God and hear His Word proclaimed

Discipleship

Growing in faith through study, prayer, and fellowship

Service

Demonstrating God's love through acts of compassion
